Why We Love it

Among the great dress watches of the twentieth century, few references command the reverence afforded to the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 570. Introduced in 1938 as a larger counterpart to the seminal Ref. 96, the 570 represented a bold step forward for Patek Philippe. At a time when most wristwatches remained modest in size, its 35mm case was considered remarkably substantial, earning the reference the affectionate nickname 'Calatravone' among collectors. More than eighty years later, those proportions feel virtually perfect.

The Ref. 570 embodies everything that has made the Calatrava one of watchmaking's purest design expressions. Its flat bezel, elongated tapered lugs, and uncluttered dial create an aesthetic of remarkable restraint, proving that true elegance rarely requires embellishment. The present example is especially appealing, featuring a warm cream dial that has developed a beautiful tone over the decades. Applied gold lapped hour markers are complemented by an outer minute track composed of applied pearl markers, creating a subtle sense of depth and refinement that rewards close inspection. The raised enamel Patek Philippe Genève signature serves as a reminder of the extraordinary attention to detail that defined the manufacture during this period.

The case retains the graceful architecture for which the reference is celebrated. Long flowing lugs extend naturally from the caseband, while the slim bezel maximizes dial presence and contributes to the watch's balanced proportions. Visible hallmarks beneath the lugs and along the case flank further underscore the quality and integrity of its construction.

Powering this later example is the manually wound Calibre 27SC, one of Patek Philippe's most respected mid-century movements. The introduction of sweep center seconds reflected the era's evolving tastes, offering improved legibility while preserving the clean visual harmony of the Calatrava design. Beautifully finished and mechanically refined, the movement exemplifies the manufacture's commitment to precision and craftsmanship.

For many collectors, the Ref. 570 represents the quintessential vintage Patek Philippe. Larger than its predecessors, yet every bit as elegant, it bridges the gap between prewar restraint and modern wearability. Decades after its introduction, the Calatravone remains one of the most important and desirable dress watches ever produced—a masterclass in proportion, execution, and timeless design.
