Why We Love it

Why We Love it
–The Calatrava has always been Patek Philippe at its most distilled: a round case, clean dial, and very little standing between the wearer and the basic idea of an elegant wristwatch. The Ref. 5117R adds just enough detail to that formula to make things interesting, most notably a Clous de Paris bezel that gives an otherwise restrained dress watch a surprisingly distinctive edge.
Housed in a 37mm 18K rose gold case, the Ref. 5117R features a crisp white dial with slender black Roman numerals, a simple outer minute track, black leaf-shaped hands, central seconds, and a neatly framed date aperture at 3 o’clock. Surrounding it is the finely textured Clous de Paris, or hobnail, bezel, a traditional Patek Philippe detail that catches the light beautifully without overwhelming the dial's simplicity.
Inside is a self-winding Patek Philippe movement, giving this classically styled Calatrava the practicality of automatic winding. The watch is paired with a brown alligator leather strap and matching 18K rose gold Patek Philippe pin buckle.
At 37mm, the Ref. 5117R strikes a particularly appealing middle ground: more wrist presence than many vintage Calatravas, without sacrificing the proportions that make the model so enduring: Rose gold, Roman numerals, hobnail, and little else. Sometimes Patek Philippe really doesn’t need to complicate things. It's a stunner.
