Why We Love it
–Few watches can claim to have defined an entire category, but the Patek Philippe Calatrava is one of them.
Introduced in 1932 during a period of economic uncertainty, the Calatrava emerged as a new vision for the wristwatch. Following the stock market crash of 1929 and the Stern family's acquisition of a controlling interest in Patek Philippe, the manufacture sought to create a watch that embodied elegance through simplicity rather than complexity. Drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus movement and its philosophy of functional, uncluttered design, Patek created what would become the archetype for the modern dress watch.
Named after the Calatrava Cross—the symbol of the Spanish military order that later became the emblem of Patek Philippe—the Calatrava has served as the foundation of the manufacture's collection for nearly a century. While countless references have followed, the model's core principles of proportion, refinement, and restraint remain unchanged.
This particular example, the Reference 5117G-001, dates to the 2000s and offers one of the more distinctive interpretations of the classic Calatrava formula. Its 37mm 18K white-gold case features elegant crown guards and the model's signature Clous de Paris bezel, a detail that adds texture and visual depth while remaining unmistakably Patek Philippe. The crisp white dial features painted black Roman numerals, a matching minute track, and elegant feuille hands, creating a look that is both traditional and highly legible.
Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's self-winding Caliber 315, a beautifully finished in-house movement renowned for its reliability and refinement. The watch is fitted to a black alligator leather strap with a signed 18k white-gold pin buckle, perfectly complementing the understated sophistication of the design.
Accompanying the watch are its original inner and outer presentation boxes, Certificate of Origin, manuals, and related literature from the 2000s, making it a highly complete example of one of Patek Philippe's most enduring references.
Elegant without being ostentatious, traditional without feeling dated, the Reference 5117G embodies everything that has made the Calatrava a cornerstone of fine watchmaking for generations.
