Why We Love it
–Few complications are as closely associated with modern Patek Philippe as the Annual Calendar. Introduced by the manufacturer in 1996, the ingenious mechanism sits neatly between a conventional calendar and a perpetual calendar: it automatically distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months, requiring just one correction each year at the end of February.
Nearly three decades later, Patek revisited the formula with the Ref. 4946R-001, introduced in 2025. And while there’s plenty happening mechanically, aesthetically this is one of the more relaxed and contemporary interpretations of the complication.
The fully polished 18K rose gold case measures an extremely wearable 38mm across and 11mm thick. Importantly, Patek left the diamonds off entirely, giving the watch a clean bezel and allowing its proportions and dial to do the talking. That dial is particularly good: a rich chestnut brown treated with intersecting vertical and horizontal satin brushing. Patek describes the resulting texture as reminiscent of raw shantung silk, and it changes noticeably as the light moves across it. Rose gold applied Arabic numerals and leaf-shaped hands bring a touch of traditional Patek elegance to an otherwise surprisingly modern composition.
The calendar indications are beautifully balanced. Day and month occupy the sub-dials at 9 and 3 o’clock, respectively, while the moon phase sits at 6 o’clock with the date tucked neatly beneath it. Despite the amount of information on display, nothing feels particularly crowded. Inside is the self-winding Calibre 26-330 S QA LU, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. The 319-part movement features a 21K gold central rotor, Gyromax balance, Spiromax hairspring, and a maximum power reserve of approximately 45 hours.
Completing the look is perhaps its most unexpected detail: a chestnut calfskin strap embossed with a denim-like pattern and finished with contrasting cream stitching. It gives an otherwise classic rose-gold Patek a decidedly casual edge.
This example comes as a complete kit, including its inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, accompanying papers and pamphlets, and hangtags. Complicated without looking fussy and luxurious without becoming overly formal, the Ref. 4946R-001 is a very modern take on a complication that Patek Philippe made its own.
