Why We Love it

Why We Love It

Bonkers.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: The 1970s saw some absolutely nutso case and dial designs coming out of Switzerland, and this Omega Reference 176.005 Automatic Seamaster Chronograph is no exception.

This giant 43mm steel case features a squared crystal reminiscent of a TV screen, behind which sits a recessed silver dial with deeply sloped rehaut with tachymeter printing.  As expected, it carries a substantial presence on the wrist similar to other oversized models from the era - think PloProf 600, Big Blue, or Flightmaster, but comes with the added functionality of Omega's Calibre 1040 central minutes automatic chronograph mechanism with characteristic "airplane" hand.

This particular example is in untouched condition, bearing signs of wear from age and use, a stunning crisp silver dial with richly patinated luminous indices and matching hands, and a JB Champion bracelet with Omega signed clasp. No question that this is a statement piece. A beast of a statement piece.

And the beast is a beauty.

The Story

This unusual Seamaster Chronograph was produced for only a handful of years in the early 1970s. Despite the relative rarity and interesting design of the model, it is often overshadowed by Omega's most celebrated chronograph, the Speedmaster.

With its distinctive looks and a sturdy, innovative movement, the Seamaster Chronographs have just begun to enjoy slightly more than a cult following in recent years, making unmolested examples more difficult to unearth. Don't miss it!
