Why We Love it

1970s chronos are some of the coolest vintage watches out there. With big tonneau and cushion cases and colorful dials and handsets, these pieces always bring a smile to our faces.

The Omega Seamaster Chronograph is the embodiment of 70s cool. With the perfectly curved brushed case and the orange accents popping against the glossy sea-blue dial, The Seamaster Chronograph has everything a discerning collector could want.

Coming from the expansive Seamaster line (a line that incorporates everything from svelte gold-capped dress watches to chunky divers) the Reference 176.007 represents a delicious middle ground.

But as with anything here at analog/shift, we believe that it is what is inside the watch that truly counts. Produced between 1971 and 1974, the Seamaster Chronograph is driven by the Omega Calibre 1040, a modified version of the well-regarded Lemania 1340, a venerable movement that features a date function, a running seconds subsidiary dial with incorporated 24-hour indicator (at 9 o'clock) and a 12-hour chronograph register (at 6 o'clock) with central minute counter.

The 1040 runs at 28,800 bph and was the first automatic chronograph to run at that rate, making it an interesting piece of horological history as well. This movement enjoyed a relatively short run, however, and was replaced by the Lemania 5100 which incorporated plastic parts in an attempt to keep production costs competitive.

This particular example comes from the personal collection of one of our watchmakers, and accordingly has been maintained to the highest standards. With a strong case, crisp dial, and an uncommon blue inner tachymetre ring, this is one of the nicest examples of this reference we have encountered to date. We've set it up with an unbranded milanese "shark mesh" bracelet popular on Omega diving watches from its era, and are also including a selection of nylon straps to allow for versatile wear.

With seductive looks and a reliable movement, the Seamaster Reference 176.007 has a cult following, and honest examples in this condition rarely see the light of day. So whether you're beginning a collection or putting the finishing touches on one, the Seamaster Chronograph Reference 176.007 deserves a spot.
