Why We Love it

Here is a rare bird, indeed.

Forget your Submariners, Seamaster 300s, and Fifty Fathoms for a moment and feast your eyes on one of the most wondrous dive watches ever made by any brand, full stop. The Mido Powerwind 1000 Reference 5907 — referred to by fans as the ‘Rainbow Diver’ — is a highly unique design with a decompression scale printed directly on the dial. However, as you can see, said scale is wildly colorful, making it both easier to use and extremely appealing, aesthetically. One doesn’t even need to be a diver to appreciate it. It’s simply a stupidly fun watch!

Produced in numerous configurations in the 1960s, there are ‘Rainbow Diver’ models configured in feet or meters, with and without the date, and in myriad colors. However, despite the potential for a ‘Frankenwatch,’ the example we have here is a good one. A very good one.

This particular Reference 5907 features a 37.5mm stainless steel case, a multi-colored, exotic luminous dial with decompression scale, a signed, original crystal, and a bidirectional, rotating dive bezel. Powered by the automatic Mido cal. 1137 OC movement, it comes fitted to a stainless steel Bonklip bracelet. It’s enough to find one of these in any condition, but finding one with an outstanding dial and a strong case with correct parts is a rare occurrence, to say the least.

If you’re a serious dive watch collector, you need this piece in your collection — STAT!

Overall Condition

Case is in excellent, strong condition overall showing normal signs of wear consistent with age and use. Multi-colored exotic Tritium dial with depth chart and black chapter ring is in equally excellent condition, showing even patination throughout with matching handset with white and red chronograph hands. Signed crown. Stainless steel dive timing bezel.

Brand Story

+
We admit it, we do tend to get carried away pontificating about vintage watches. Whether it is the history of a particular piece or some oft-forgotten sidenote in the development of a particular case design or movement, there are numerous elements to vintage timepieces that make them so desirable. On the other hand, sometimes all it takes to get us excited about a particular timepiece are some killer looks.

With roots stretching back to 1918, the name Mido is a play on the Spanish phrase Yo mido - I measure.

The brand designed a host of interesting designs throughout the mid-20th Century, and even has some pretty impressive innovations in the industry, including anti-magnetic automatic wristwatches (the Mulitfort Collection) and monocoque case construction.

They even used a robot as their mascot... in 1939.

Seriously, pretty cool!
