The love for rare and beautiful objects here at Analog:Shift isn’t limited to watches. Our endless treasure hunt frequently wanders into vintage clocks, pocket knives, lighters, old-world ashtrays, diving equipment, desk sculptures, and other wonderfully unnecessary objects that tug at our nostalgic heartstrings. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all.

Which brings us to this wonderfully substantial Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR sculpture by British design house Compulsion Gallery. Measuring approximately 7 1/2” x 3” x 2”, it recreates one of the great racing cars of the 1950s, complete with its impossibly low body, intricate wire wheels, open cockpit, and driver caught mid-action behind the wheel. The real 300 SLR was developed for the 1955 World Sportscar Championship and driven by legends including Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. Most famously, Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson drove one to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia, completing the roughly 1,000-mile course in just over ten hours at a record average speed of nearly 98 mph.

Produced during the 1990s or early 2000s, the sculpture was created using one of Compulsion Gallery’s signature techniques. Rather than being cast from solid metal, a high-density resin core was thermal-plated in lead-free pewter, then hand-polished and lacquered. The process gives the piece a satisfyingly substantial weight and cool metallic feel while allowing the details of the 300 SLR’s curvaceous bodywork, wire wheels, cockpit, and driver to really come through.

Compulsion Gallery specialized in oversized automotive and sporting sculptures before eventually disappearing, and its pieces have since developed a following among petrolheads and automobilia collectors. This one brings together Mercedes-Benz, the Silver Arrows, the golden age of sports-car racing, and one of the most beautiful competition cars ever built.

Technically, it’s a paperweight. But covering up dull paperwork with a fabulous 300 SLR seems almost blasphemous!

Brand Story

+
Compulsion Gallery was a British design house best known for its substantial automotive, sporting, and Star Wars sculptures, particularly detailed recreations of legendary racing cars and movie characters. Produced primarily during the 1990s and early 2000s, its pieces were typically made from high-density cast resin, thermal-plated in lead-free pewter, then hand-polished and lacquered to achieve the weight and appearance of solid metal. With subjects ranging from Darth Vader and Formula 1 cars to classic sports and competition machinery, Compulsion Gallery transformed motorsport and movie history into handsome pieces of desk sculpture. The company is no longer in business, giving its distinctive creations an added appeal among collectors of vintage automobilia and design objects.
