Why We Love it

MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) is without question one of the most creative outfits in the contemporary boutique watchmaking space.

Founded by industry veteran watchmaker Max Büsser in 2005, the brand is built upon collaborating with leading horological designers, watchmakers, visionaries and brands such as Massena LAB, L’Épée, Alain Silberstein, H. Moser, Black Badger, and more. Their timepieces — and we specify ‘timepieces,’ as MB&F makes much more than just wristwatches — are some of the most innovative, daring, and properly unique products in modern horology, known for their use of alternative time-telling systems, unique materials, and interesting complications.

Take for the Horological Machine N°9 Flow, or HM9 for short. The HM9 debuted in 2018 with a jaw-dropping case silhouette was reminiscent of something out of The Jetsons. Its hard to believe that this watch even exists - but it does - and offers one of the brand’s most creative displays of mechanical ingenuity that resonates through horological - as well as retrofuturistic design - circles today.

This particular HM9 features a 47mm x 57mm rose gold case with curved sapphire apertures displaying the inner workings of its HM9 engine. This stunning movement took three years to develop and represents the steady innovation spanning across the 13 in-house movements from MB&F that preceded it. In its own distinctly expressive and mesmerizing way, the HM9 features a visible twin oscillator and balance system with a central differential visible to the wearer.  Comprised of 301 individual components, the manual-winding HM9 engine is greater than the sum of its parts any way you look at it!

The case is another exercise in innovation. It mandated an entirely new manufacturing process to achieve the satin finish across its sloping case curves and polished accents along its sharper edges. The topside of the case features a large signed ‘turbine’ crown and at it's base, and its gloss black luminous dial is oriented in a 'driver's' position, with a relatively low-key design featuring printed Arabic indices and a sword handset.

Fitted to its signed brown leather strap with tonal stitching and a signed 18k rose gold and titanium spring deployant clasp, this high-horology masterpiece is in outstanding condition throughout, showing only the faintest signs of wear from careful handling.

Accompanied by its complete set including its boxes, papers and a signed leather folio, this excitingly innovative design offers a unique experience in the high end independent space.

Eccentric and absolutely cool, it perfectly sums up what we love about the mad scientists at MB&F!

Brand Story

+
Swiss watch industry veteran, businessman, and entrepreneur Maximilian Büsser founded his eponymous brand MB&F (“Maximilian Büsser & Friends”) in 2005 following accomplished stints at Harry Winston and Jaeger-LeCoultre. A horological laboratory of sorts, MB&F is unlike traditional watchmaking enterprises, bringing together innovators from across the industry to collaborate on “Horological Machines” and “Legacy Machines” — timekeeping devices and wristwatches that push the creative and engineering envelopes in completely new directions.

A relatively small and nimble company, MB&F crafts kinetic sculptures in partnership with some of the most learned minds in watchmaking, including Stephen McDonnell, Kari Voutilainen, L’Epée, and others, the results of which are breathtaking. Certain of these works are displayed in the company’s “M.A.D. Galleries” (“mechanical art devices”) around the world, allowing buyers, potential customers, and others to view the firm’s groundbreaking horological art in a nontraditional setting.

MB&F and its creations have been awarded by the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève — the “Oscars” of the watch world — in recognition of the firm’s creativity, spirit, and watchmaking accomplishment. Truly, there are few companies operating today whose wares can be considered as thought-provoking and innovative as those of Maximilian Büsser & Friends.
