–Why We Love It
Sometimes simplicity trumps complexity. When watches are stripped down to the basics, form and function are at the forefront. Looking at this Longines from the 1940s, it makes us wonder whether there is really need for anything more.
With its 'Calatrava' style case, this steel beauty is a gem straight out of the war years. Though the watch measures in at 35mm, it wears a bit larger (we think 37mm feels about right) since the dial is oversized and the bezel is thin. It also features thick lugs and carries a bit of heft, despite its frame. Its silvery-cream toned dial shows a rich patination, and the applied dart indices and feuille hands are applied yellow gold, showing a distinctive copper tone from age. Internally, the watch is poweed by a manual winding Calibre 12687 movement.
Offering a very attainable price point, you'll get a whole lot of watch for the money with this one. Whether it's your first vintage watch, or an addition to a function-first dress collection, this one is a stunner.
It will go quick, so don't wait!
The Story
So much of the modern watch world is confused. No iconic style, no cherished design language ever benefitted from addition. True style is spoken in simple direct tones, executed effortlessly in a cohesive voice.
Longines has had its fair share of pitfalls. Many of of the brand's offerings since the Quartz Crisis have flunked; their design language was injected with artificial features that leaned more toward glitz and glam than style and function. Even today, the brand seems to tip-toe about the market, asking questions with their pieces instead of answering them.
But the Longines of today is not the Longines of yesteryear.
From the late 1800s, Longines was at the sharp end of the watchmaking spear. Constantly innovating, Longines was a company to be compared with the other major Swiss manufactures. By 1919, Longines was the official supplier of timepieces for the International Aeronautical Federation, working to develop highly accurate navigation chronometers for many of the era's great aviation pioneers.
