Why We Love it
–Founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Longines quickly earned a reputation at the forefront of horological innovation. Constantly pushing boundaries, the brand stood shoulder to shoulder with Switzerland’s most prestigious manufactures. By 1919, Longines was named the official supplier of timepieces to the International Aeronautical Federation, developing highly accurate navigation chronometers for pioneering aviators of the era. Among its most celebrated creations is the Lindbergh Hour Angle, designed in collaboration with Charles Lindbergh to help pilots calculate their precise geographic position with the aid of a sextant and latitude readings.
From the 1930s through the 1950s, Longines also produced a series of elegantly restrained time-only watches. Often compared to the famed Patek Philippe Calatrava, these models featured slim 34mm stainless steel cases, considered ideal for the era, and were praised for their perfect proportions and refined simplicity. They exemplified the quiet confidence of mid-century design, pairing understatement with impeccable balance.
By the late 1950s, Longines introduced the Conquest collection, which quickly became a benchmark of versatile sophistication. Early Conquest models struck a rare balance: robust enough for sporty, everyday wear, yet refined enough for more formal occasions—akin to the Rolex Datejust in spirit. Reference 9000, featuring a handsome black dial and sharp angular indices, is equipped with a reliable automatic movement, a waterproof case, and timeless styling. The 1950s Conquest embodied the marriage of practicality and elegance that remains a hallmark of great mid-century watch design.
