1995 Land Rover Defender With Rhino

In 1995, Land Rover, the British marque famed for its off-road vehicles used by militaries, dignitaries, outdoor outfitters, and more, released the Defender 90, the first Land Rover to utilize the “Defender” moniker. It was during this time that the brand began moving its vehicles upmarket, issuing limited-edition series — such as that pictured here, an edition of 500 — and offering more luxurious trim options.

Still, the khaki green Defender pictured in this classic 1990s advertisement as it attempts to escape a charging rhino while on safari epitomizes the Land Rover spirit. A cheeky headline drives home the sort of sticky situations which Land Rover owners often find themselves in, beckoning the reader to learn more about this most intrepid of outdoor vehicles. Printed in full color but emphasizing the woodsy greens and browns of the Defender aesthetic, it would do well in a home or office (or garage) of someone who leads an outdoorsy life.

It’s also important to note that this is more than just an ad. Like the model pictured, it’s a limited edition — in this case, an original advertising proof. What’s a proof? As conveyed by a gentleman who worked at the agency responsible for creating many Land Rover ads throughout the 1990s, a proof was “made in the preparation leading up to the ad appearing in the magazine, printed on very good stock with rich, accurate color.” In short, think of a proof as a prototype.

And speaking of creating ads, that same adman who supplied this original proof from 1995 was front and center at the photoshoot. He fondly remembers, “We went to an animal park in South Carolina. The rhino was named Tank. He had terrible eyesight, but he responded to his trainer’s voice. So we took the back door off the Defender 90, the trainer sat in the back and called out to Tank until he started following the vehicle. We picked up the speed until he was chasing it. That shot is basically unretouched. He was really chasing the vehicle.”

Can’t make this stuff up!
