Why We Love it

–

Few watches capture the optimism of late-1990s and early-2000s industrial design quite like an Ikepod. Founded in 1994 by Oliver Ike and designer Marc Newson, the brand approached the wristwatch less as a traditional piece of horology and more as an object. The signature was its smooth, lug-less case: rounded, architectural, slightly futuristic, and immediately recognizable. Today, that original design language feels remarkably fresh.

The Chronopod “Black PPK” Ref. C007-SI-LB carries that Ikepod philosophy into a thoroughly wearable chronograph. Its substantial 44mm case is rendered in brushed 316L stainless steel, but the familiar UFO-like profile and absence of conventional lugs allow it to sit surprisingly naturally on the wrist. The integrated black silicone strap continues directly from the case, making the entire watch feel like a single piece of industrial design rather than a collection of separate components.

Against the steel case, the monochromatic black dial keeps things graphic. Three contrasting registers provide the chronograph indications and 24-hour display, while a small circular date aperture is tucked neatly into the layout. Slim baton markers, white hands, and the minute track around the dial’s perimeter add just enough contrast without compromising the almost instrument-like appearance. Inside is a Miyota quartz chronograph movement, an appropriately straightforward and reliable engine for a watch whose real complication is its design.

This example is fitted with its integrated black silicone strap and signature pin buckle and is accompanied by its recycled Ikepod boxes, papers, and pamphlets.

The Black PPK is a reminder of what makes Ikepod interesting: it doesn’t really look like anything else. More than a conventional chronograph, it’s a piece of turn-of-the-century futurism that still looks as if it arrived from somewhere ahead of us.

Brand Story

+
Following his graduation from Sydney College of the Arts, budding industrial designer Marc Newson turned his recent studies in jewelry and sculpture into the Large Pod Watch — a 60mm, aluminum-cased behemoth devoid of any extraneous ornamentation and paired to a rubber strap. A harbinger of things to come, this timepiece would form the aesthetic underpinnings of a brand Newson founded with Oliver Ike in 1994, called Ikepod.

Though the company was only a modest success in the 1990s, its watches — which presaged the ‘large watch’ trend of the late 1990s/early 2000s — would subsequently become cult classics. The Hemipode, which measures 44mm in diameter, cemented the firm as an innovator by marrying a large, monobloc case to an automatic movement that powered various compilations: a chronograph, a chronograph with GMT, and a chronograph with a large date window at 12 o’clock. Costing over $10,000 in gold, they ushered in the era of the high-end independent.

Today, Ikepod is no longer helmed by Newson and Ike — owned by Swiss investors, the new Ikepod watches are made in Hong Kong and are powered by Japanese-made quartz movements. However, strong horological clout remains, with design duties having been taken over by Emmanuel Gueit, who conceived Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore. Original Newson-era models are, of course, highly collectible; forward-thinking, envelope-pushing objects, they reflect the singular genius of the award-winning Aussie designer.
