1969 Herman Miller Eames Chair And Ottoman

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are grail objects for many. Designed in 1956, they remain largely unchanged today — a testament to their great design.

Its conceptualizers, Charles and Ray Eames, were pioneers in the design of molded, plywood furniture — the type that was meant to be easily reproducible, and affordable. The exception was their Lounge Chair and Ottoman, a pair of luxury products designed for a high-end market. Originally crafted from plywood layers covered in a rosewood veneer and fitted with leather, the set has since become iconic, part of the permanent collection of numerous museums such as the MFA in Boston and MoMA in New York City. Indeed, entire homes are based around it.

This sleek ad from the late 1960s calls to mind the best in design from that era, echoing the pops of color paired with highly saturated imagery found in Blue Note jazz covers. With its excellent use of negative space and compelling, witty copy — “For Christmas delivery write Santa Claus, ℅ North Pole *send carbon to Herman Miller, Zeeland, Michigan” — it beautifully captures the Lounge Chair and Ottoman as the pièce de résistance of a room, and numbers amongst the best advertisements from the period from any product family.

About our collaboration with Ad Patina

We're thrilled to be collaborating once again with our longtime friend Nick at Ad Patina to bring you a selection of the most-popular and hard to find original vintage magazine advertisements curated specifically for Analog:Shift!

Scouring the world for forgotten marketing treasures, Ad Patina's raison de être very much mimics our own - to hunt down these wonderful bits of history, preserve and restore them as needed, and share them with an enthusiastic community.

These documents of horological and advertising history have entered the collecting conversation as the ultimate accompanying accessory to go along with hobbies and passions. They have found themselves framed in homes and offices around the world.

Every one of these wonderful pieces is a genuine, vintage advertisement that has been professionally framed to ensure years of enjoyment to come - no reprints or reproductions here!

Much like a traditional piece of art - a painting or photograph - an original advertisement can be appreciated for its design as well as for its power to evoke nostalgia. Something vintage enthusiasts know all about!
