Details

Precision doesn’t necessarily require complexity. This vintage Hanhart Swing strips the mechanical stopwatch down to its essentials, with an exceptionally clean white dial, oversized black numerals and a compact minute counter at the top “12” position. This particular model has a distinctly modernist look: the bold 5-to-60 seconds scale dominates the dial, while the smaller subsidiary register counts elapsed minutes.

Made in Germany, the Swing is powered by a manually wound 7-jewel mechanical movement with shock protection, its straightforward crown-operated architecture designed for the sort of dependable, repetitive timing demanded by sport and professional use. The polished case and almost laboratory-like dial give it the wonderful instrument quality that makes vintage stopwatches so appealing today. There’s nothing decorative here because there doesn’t need to be.

This example also retains the accessories that give these utilitarian objects so much personality: its original white braided neck cord, soft white Hanhart SWING Germany pouch, and even its wonderfully graphic yellow-and-black Hanhart hangtag. Once simply a piece of precision equipment, it now feels like a beautifully preserved bit of mid-century German industrial design, and a reminder that sometimes the simplest dial is the coolest one.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1882 by Johann A. Hanhart in Diessenhofen, Switzerland, before relocating to Schwenningen in southern Germany, Hanhart built its reputation on precision timing. The company introduced an affordable mechanical stopwatch in 1924 and went on to become one of Germany’s most important makers of stopwatches, chronographs, and professional timing instruments. Its robust designs found their way into sports, motorsport, aviation, industry, and laboratories, while Hanhart wrist chronographs became particularly recognizable for their functional layouts and signature red pushers. More than 140 years after its founding, Hanhart remains closely associated with its original obsession: making highly legible, dependable instruments built to measure elapsed time.
