Why We Love it

–

By the 1960s, thin was in. Tailoring was becoming leaner, design more streamlined, and watchmakers were competing to create automatic watches that slipped beneath a shirt cuff with almost no effort. Hamilton’s wonderfully named Thin-O-Matic collection fit the moment perfectly.

Introduced at the beginning of the decade, the Thin-O-Matic represented an interesting chapter for Hamilton. The great American watchmaker was increasingly looking to Switzerland for movements and production expertise, combining its distinctly American design sensibility with the sophisticated ultra-thin automatic technology being developed in Europe. The result was a family of watches that looked clean, modern, and remarkably refined.

This 1960s Thin-O-Matic is housed in a beautifully proportioned 34mm stainless steel case, a size that feels particularly appropriate for the restrained design. Its silver sunburst dial is pared down to the essentials, with applied faceted markers, slim hands, a central seconds hand, and Hamilton’s stylized “H” logo at 12 o’clock. The scripted Thin-O-Matic signature above 6 is one of those wonderfully optimistic mid-century names that tell you exactly what the watch was designed to accomplish.

Inside is an automatic mechanical movement, allowing Hamilton to offer the convenience of self-winding in an impressively slender package. It was a technically sophisticated proposition in its day, but the engineering never overwhelms the design. From the front, this is simply a handsome, beautifully balanced dress watch. This example is paired with a black lizard leather strap and stainless steel pin buckle, a combination that suits its understated 1960s character perfectly.

More than six decades later, the Thin-O-Matic makes a convincing argument for the enduring appeal of mid-century watch design. No oversized case, no unnecessary complication, no nostalgia added after the fact. Just 34mm of genuinely good 1960s design.

Brand Story

+
The Department of Defense first ordered General Issue (GI) watches in 1964 to outfit soldiers in the years leading up to the Vietnam War. Like the 'Dirty Dozen', the GI watches were made to resist exposure in inhospitable environments. Corrosion-resistant steel cases were utilized to protect the movement from debris, moisture, and shock that it would encounter in the jungles of Vietnam or the deserts of the Middle East.

The DoD contracted GI watches from many manufacturers, the most notable among them being Hamilton and Benrus. While other manufacturers cast their cases in plastic or fiberglass, Hamilton--the first manufacturer to receive the contract in 1964--cast theirs in steel throughout the entire 30 years of production. The look of these watches remained more or less the same during this interval, in keeping with the utility of their design and construction.

Their dials were spartan and featured printed Arabic indices for both 12- and 24-hour graduations, with luminous plots at each interval, matching luminous 'syringe' hands, and a 'spear' central seconds hand coated with a healthy dollop of Tritium to ensure maximum legibility. The 17-jewel, manual-wind movements were equipped with a hacking feature: a mechanism that stops the second hand from moving when setting the time. This enabled soldiers to synchronize their timepieces for maximum accuracy during elite operations and coordinated maneuvers. Despite their compact 34mm size, these watches were designed to take a beating.
