Why We Love it

Some watches tell the time. Others tell a story. This rare Hamilton Fairlane tells 35 years' worth.

Produced exclusively for the Ford Motor Company between 1964 and 1970, the Fairlane was never offered to the public and does not appear in contemporary Hamilton catalogs. Instead, it served as a presentation watch awarded to Ford employees upon reaching an extraordinary milestone: thirty-five years of service to the company. For decades, the model remained largely unknown outside a small circle of Hamilton collectors, until it was recently identified and documented by the collecting community.

This particular example was presented to Roland O. Wells in 1965 in recognition of his thirty-five years with Ford, a career that began in 1930. The factory-engraved caseback commemorates his service and bears the facsimile signature of Henry Ford II, grandson of Henry Ford and the company's CEO from 1960 through 1979. It's the kind of personal history that transforms a watch from an object into an artifact.

The watch itself is every bit as handsome as its story. Housed in a 10K solid gold case, the Fairlane embodies the clean, confident styling of mid-century American watchmaking. The beautifully preserved silver dial features a subtle radial-brushed finish, applied gold hour markers, stylized Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9, and a finely printed minute track around the perimeter. Elegant gold hands and a signed Hamilton crown complete the package.

Inside beats a Swiss-made Hamilton manual-winding movement fitted with an alloy mainspring, while a fresh acrylic crystal keeps the presentation crisp and clear. The watch is paired with a tan leather top-stitched strap that perfectly complements the warmth of the gold case.

Hamilton produced many notable watches throughout its history, but few carry the significance—or exclusivity—of the Fairlane. It represents a uniquely American tradition, a time when companies celebrated decades of loyalty with something meaningful, beautifully made, and built to last.

Brand Story

+
Hamilton is one of the great American watch stories — equal parts industry, invention, and style.

Founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hamilton built its early reputation on something very unglamorous but deeply important: accuracy. The brand became known as “The Watch of Railroad Accuracy,” supplying timepieces that helped keep America’s rail network running safely and on schedule. From there, Hamilton expanded into military service, producing dependable watches for U.S. forces during both World Wars — a legacy that cemented its reputation for rugged, practical engineering.

But Hamilton wasn’t only about function. By the mid-20th century, the brand became a quiet powerhouse of design, producing some of the most elegant and modernist dress watches of the era — including ultra-thin, architectural pieces that could go toe-to-toe with far more expensive Swiss competition. Hollywood also played a role: Hamilton watches appeared on-screen for decades, giving the brand a rare blend of utility, credibility, and cultural cachet.

Today, Hamilton sits at a fascinating crossroads: an American-born icon with Swiss manufacturing muscle, still known for watches that feel purposeful, sharp, and genuinely wearable.
