Why We Love it

Few American watch companies are as closely associated with the golden age of wristwatches as Gruen. Founded in Cincinnati in 1894 by Dietrich Grün, the company built its reputation on combining American ingenuity with Swiss watchmaking expertise. While collectors often gravitate toward the famed Curvex and Veri-Thin models, Gruen's rectangular dress watches remain among the brand's most appealing offerings.

This Gruen Burton is a wonderful example. Its rectangular case features finely engraved flanks that add texture and visual interest without overwhelming the watch's clean lines. The proportions feel distinctly of the era, capturing the streamlined aesthetic that defined the 1940s and 1950s.

The standout feature is the striking black dial. Applied Breguet numerals seem to float above the surface, creating remarkable depth and contrast. Their sculptural shape is paired with elegant hands and a recessed small-seconds register at six o'clock, while subtle gilt accents around the dial and subsidiary register provide warmth against the dark background.

Inside beats a manually wound mechanical movement, preserving the tactile daily ritual that has long attracted collectors to vintage watches. Combined with its compact size and distinctive dial, the Burton offers tremendous character in a remarkably wearable package.

Today, examples such as this remind us why Gruen remains one of the great names in American watchmaking history. The engraved case, uncommon black dial, applied Breguet numerals, and small-seconds display come together to create a watch that feels every bit as compelling today as it did nearly a century ago.

Brand Story

+
Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1894 by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Grün, Gruen became one of America's most successful watch companies during the first half of the twentieth century. Known for blending American design with Swiss manufacturing, the brand earned acclaim for innovative models such as the Curvex, one of the first watches shaped to follow the contour of the wrist. Gruen's catalog ranged from ultra-thin dress watches to sporty chronographs, but the company is perhaps best remembered for its distinctive Art Deco-era designs. Today, vintage Gruen watches remain popular with collectors for their creativity, quality, and accessible entry point into early American wristwatch history.
