Grand Seiko Hi-Beat Automatic GMT
Why We Love it
Why We Love it–
Grand Seiko is the darling of contemporary watch collectors today, and taking even a cursory glance at the design specs — or better yet, an example in the metal — it’s easy to see why.
The artisanal talent that goes into the design and manufacturing process of a GS dial alone is simply stunning. Depending on the angle, the color and composition of a textured Grand Seiko face will look completely different. They’re truly works of art steeped in Japanese tradition.
This particular GS is a Reference SBGJ237 from circa 2021, a Hi-Beat 36000 GMT model with an automatic movement. Able to display three different time zones, it’s an ideal piece for the consummate traveler. Housed in a 44.2mm stainless steel case with holey lugs, a sapphire crystal, a signed crown at 5 o’clock, and a blue and white, rotating 24-hour GMT bezel, it features a sunburst blue dial with applied indices, a matching ‘sword’ handset, an inner 24-hour scale, and a date window at 4:00.
Powering this handsome traveler’s watch is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9S86 movement with 55 hours of power reserve, while its bracelet takes the form of a stainless steel, multi-link affair with a signed, push-button deployant clasp. Accompanied by its factory goodies, it’s a stunning example of Grand Seiko’s savoir-faire, and the perfect timepiece for someone on the move.
Don’t let it get away!
Other models of Grand Seiko would follow, coupling those elegant “sparkling” cases with high-grade (often hi-beat) manually-wound or automatic movements. When compared to the no-nonsense tool watches like the 6309 line of divers, the Grand Seiko was worlds away—refined, elegant, and cosmopolitan. Seiko intended the watch to be an answer to dress watches crafted by the Swiss, and at that it certainly did succeed.
Well-regarded in its home country, the Grand Seiko reached a global audience in 2010—and has captivated consumers ever since.
