Why We Love it

We’re the first to admit that we’re true ‘vintage’ nerds here at Analog:Shift.

That said, every so often we come across a new timepiece that truly blows our minds — be it because of aesthetics, an innovative manufacture movement, the history of the brand, some indescribable ‘x-factor’ that just does it for us, or some combination thereof. Well, that's exactly what happened when we stumbled across this incredible Sixties Blue by Glashütte Original…just look at this thing! A Bauhaus-inspired tribute to midcentury design, it’s a contemporary masterpiece, in our humble opinion.

Housed in a perfectly sized stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, and a polished bezel, it featured a sunburst ‘glacier blue’ dial with applied stainless steel ‘stick’ and ‘Arabic’ indices, a matching ‘baton’ handset, and an outer minute track.

Powered by the automatic Calibre 29-52 Glashütte Original with a gold oscillating weight — which is visible via an exhibition caseback — and paired to a signed grey suede leather strap with a signed steel pin buckle, it’s a beautifully restrained and proportioned timepiece that sits somewhere between everyday and dress watch.

In outstanding condition and shipping with its factory goodies, this G.O. may date to the 2020s, but spiritually, it’s an object of the 1960s — perhaps the best decade for industrial design in the 20th century.

We’ll sure you’ll agree.

Brand Story

+
Located in the famed horological center of Glashütte, Glashütte Original has a long and storied history of timepiece manufacturing that dates back to 1845, when watchmaking first came to the small German town. Following World War II, Glashütte’s watchmaking activities were nationalized under the GDR, and all local watchmaking enterprises were united under the VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), a state-owned entity.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the GUB was privatized and subsequently purchased by Bavarian businessman Heinz W. Pfeifer. Pfeifer restructured the firm, eventually selling it to the Swatch Group. The name given to the new entity, Glashütte Original, is a nod to the pocket watches produced in the German town in the 19th century, which bore this as a signature to deter counterfeiting.
Today’s ‘G.O’ creates up to 95% of its watch components, preserving the savoir-faire of its German namesake. From highly complicated calendar movements to stylish dress watches and tough-as-nails divers, Glashütte Original’s wares are a testament to Germany’s watchmaking achievements — achievements that rival its Swiss counterparts in execution and finesse.
