Why We Love it

–

Some homage watches merely borrow a few recognizable details. The Gevril Tribeca went considerably further. Today, it has become a collectible curiosity in its own right.

Created in the 1990s, the Tribeca recreated the look and feel of the vintage Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona at a time when the originals were already becoming increasingly desirable. More than simply riffing on the exotic dial, Gevril paid remarkable attention to the proportions and details that made those early Daytonas so compelling.

This Ref. R005/1 is housed in a 37mm stainless steel case with drilled lugs, screw-down chronograph pushers, an acrylic crystal, and a black tachymeter bezel. The white tritium dial is the star of the show, with contrasting black registers, squared hash marks, an outer minute track picked out with red accents, and the unmistakable Art Deco flavor associated with the “Paul Newman” configuration. Each Tribeca was individually numbered, with its production number printed prominently in red above the 6 o’clock register.

The watch is paired with a solid-link, Oyster-style stainless steel bracelet fitted with a signed clasp. Taken together, the dimensions, acrylic crystal, pump of those screw-down pushers, and wonderfully graphic dial give it a convincing vintage presence on the wrist without pretending to be something it isn’t. This example remains in fantastic condition and is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, as well as warranty card and additional links.

And that is arguably what makes the Tribeca more interesting today than when it was new. What began as an alternative to an increasingly expensive vintage Daytona has developed its own following. Produced in limited numbers and long discontinued, the Tribeca now occupies that wonderfully strange collecting territory where an homage has itself become scarce and desirable.

The Tribeca may have started with the “Paul Newman” Daytona, but nearly three decades later, it has become a pretty great story in its own right!

Brand Story

+
A Swiss-founded watchmaker currently based in New York City with a history dating back to the mid-18th century, Gevril is perhaps most famous today for its “Paul Newman” Daytona-inspired Tribeca. However, the brand’s watchmaking activities are much more widespread and deserving of attention.

Following a trip by founder Jacques Gevril and fellow watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz to Spain in 1758 to present musical automata to King Ferdinand VI, Gevril remained in-country and became Royal Watchmaker, producing timepieces for the Crown. His ancestors continued his watchmaking enterprise and contributed high-end enamel techniques, the results of which were pocket watches so spectacular that one is in the collection of the Muséum Genève.

Today, Gevril is owned by a Swiss businessman. With a manufacturing facility in Switzerland and its headquarters in New York City, the brand is poised to continue the illustrious watchmaking tradition of its founder, doing so by producing some 6,000 timepieces per year in both steel and precious metals.
