Why We Love it

The ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona — in all its various iterations — is one of the most desirable watches in the world. Unfortunately, due to scarcity and price not every collector can acquire one.

That’s where the Gevril Tribeca comes in.

Gevril, a Swiss-founded watchmaker based in New York City has a history dating back to the mid-18th century. Produced in the late 1990s by the brand, the Tribeca is essentially a love letter to the ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona, and was offered in a strictly limited series in steel and gold versions, making an aesthetic once available only to the most well-heeled (or luckiest) collectors suddenly available to a wider audience.

This particular example is housed in a 37mm stainless steel case with holey lugs, screw-down pushers, an acrylic crystal, and stainless steel bezel with a black tachymeter scale insert. Featuring a matte black dial with a trio of radially-brushed silver subsidiary registers, a baton handset, and an outer, 1/5th-second track, it displays its individual production number in red text at the 6 o’clock position. Powered by a workhorse ETA movement, it comes fitted to an Oyster-style multi-link stainless steel bracelet with a signed blade clasp to complete the look.

If you’re in love with the idea of owning a ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona but aren’t in the position to, ahem, take out a second mortgage on your home to purchase one — then you owe it yourself to check out the Tribeca. Unlike a myriad of homage watches that have flooded the market, the Gevril has earned itself a place of respect in the collector community, and has indeed become truly collectable in their own right!

Brand Story

+
A Swiss-founded watchmaker currently based in New York City with a history dating back to the mid-18th century, Gevril is perhaps most famous today for its “Paul Newman” Daytona-inspired Tribeca. However, the brand’s watchmaking activities are much more widespread, and deserving of attention.

Following a trip by founder Jacques Gevril and fellow watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz to Spain in 1758 to present musical automata to King Ferdinand VI, Gevril remained in-country and became Royal Watchmaker, producing timepieces for the Crown. His ancestors continued his watchmaking enterprise and contributed high-end enamel techniques, the results of which were pocket watches so spectacular that one is in the collection of the Muséum Genève.

Today, Gevril is owned by a Swiss businessman. With a manufacture in Switzerland and its headquarters in New York City, the brand is poised to continue the illustrious watchmaking tradition of its founder, which it does via an output of some 6,000 timepieces per year in both steel and precious metals.
