–Sure, Analog:Shift is a business built around the love of watches — mostly mechanical watches. But, in essence, it’s our love for timepieces and timekeeping in general that are the common themes throughout the items we procure. And that includes the love of clocks: pocket watches, travel clocks, and more.
After all, in the couple hundred years before the First World War, personal timekeeping was all about the pocket watch, and before that, it was larger clocks that were front and center, horologically. We still believe a good clock — such as a classic travel model from the 1920s or 1930s — has a place in the watch lover’s collection.
This particular timepiece is a vintage Gallet stopwatch from the mid-20th century. However, it's no typical stopwatch, but a rattrapante (or "split-seconds") model. Equipped with dual chonograph seconds hands, it can measure two events concurrently, thus differentiating between (and recording) separate lap times, for example. More complicated than your typical stopwatch, such timepieces were used to time horse or automobile races.Â
Measuring 49mm in stainless steel, it features an acrylic crystal, an ornate winding and start/stop 'onion crown,' and a small reset pusher at 10:30. Its glossy white dial boasts an outer 1/5th-seconds track in black; a 30-minute register in black 'Arabic' indices; an inner 60-minute register in red 'Arabic' indices; a 15-minute recorder below 12 o'clock; and a black handset. Powered by a hand-wound Jules Racine movement with seven jewels, it's a rare fine in excellent condition.
For someone with a love of micro-mechanics or the history of timekeeping, such a timepiece is the perfect gift or objet d'art.Â
