Elgin USMC

Take a look at vintage black and white photographs from the World War, and you might spot some interesting wristwear. The US military has historically been issued some of the coolest in timekeepers and field watches.

Which is why we’re so excited to bring you this particular timepiece: Made by Elgin Watch Company, it’s housed in a 30mm plated case with ‘holey’ lugs, an acrylic crystal, an oversize crown, and a beautiful profiled bezel. It features a cream dial stained by radium burn, a reminder of the incredible history underpinning the piece.

Flip the watch over and it’s still possible to make out the incredible USMC marine corps designation that sets this watch apart from other incredible field watches. USMC watches are not common to find in general, and the combination of the Marine provenance with the age and Elgin branding makes this piece one of the best and rarest in the world of military timekeepers. 

This beauty is powered by an exceptional Caliber 532 manually wound movement, and features a dust cover to protect the integrity of the movement when in the trenches.

Though it may be small by any contemporary measure, throw this little guy on with jeans and a t-shirt — maybe save the vintage military uniforms for the re-enactors! — and you’ll absolutely be the coolest guy at the party.

Few companies embody the golden age of American watchmaking quite like Elgin. Founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois, the company would grow into one of the country's largest and most prolific watch manufacturers, producing tens of millions of timepieces over the course of a century. Its success was built upon a distinctly American approach to horology: combining precision engineering with industrial-scale manufacturing to bring reliable, affordable watches to an increasingly mobile nation.

Initially specializing in pocket watches, Elgin helped transform watchmaking from a largely artisanal pursuit into a modern industry. Its sprawling Illinois factory employed thousands of workers, turning out everything from simple, utilitarian timepieces to beautifully finished railroad-grade watches. By the early 20th century, the company had embraced the wristwatch, producing elegant dress models alongside robust instruments intended for professional use.

Like many of its American competitors, Elgin played an important role in supplying the U.S. armed forces during both World Wars. Its military output included wristwatches manufactured to government specifications, among them the famed A-11 pilot's watch of World War II. Distinguished by its highly legible dial, hacking seconds mechanism, and straightforward construction, the A-11 became one of the defining American military watches of the conflict. Elgin also produced specialized timepieces for naval personnel and other military applications, cementing its reputation for dependable, purpose-built instruments.

Yet Elgin's catalog was hardly limited to military watches. Throughout the mid-20th century, the company produced a vast array of handsome dress watches, innovative automatic models, and distinctive designs that reflected changing American tastes. From Art Deco styling to the clean lines of postwar modernism, its watches offer a fascinating cross-section of 20th-century industrial design.

Ultimately, mounting competition from Swiss manufacturers and changing economic conditions brought an end to Elgin's domestic watch production in the 1960s. Though the original manufacture is long gone, its legacy remains firmly entrenched in American horological history. For today's collectors, vintage Elgin watches represent an increasingly compelling combination of historical significance, attractive design, and remarkable value.

We generally ship our products via FedEx, fully insured, within 5 business days of purchase. An adult signature is required for receipt of all packages for insurance purposes. Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
