Why We Love it

Eberhard, despite being an old name in watchmaking, might not have the name recognition of Omega or Rolex, but has had a lasting impression on the industry.

When Georges Eberhard went into business in 1887, he was only 22 years old. But he exhibited a mastery of his craft that belied his young age. Early on, his company produced thoughtfully-executed, complicated watches that were among some of the finest of the period.

Under his brilliant leadership, the manufacture’s headquarters was built in La Chaux-du-Fonds—a behemoth of a Beaux Arts building that occupied an entire block.

After his death, his legacy was carried on by his sons, Georges and Maurice, and it was under the brothers that Eberhard enjoyed its greatest successes.

Some of the company’s earliest triumphs were in the realm of chronographs, including the debut of a double-pusher chronograph in 1935 and a chronograph with a rattrapante function in 1939.

But the brand’s best-known product is without a doubt the Scafograf dive watch, a perennial favorite of collectors.

However, theirs was an expansive output, encompassing everything from delicate time-only ladies’ watches to other, more complicated creations—like this triple calendar wristwatch.

Watches like this one are enjoying something of a resurgence in recent years, with brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre releasing reissues of classic triple calendar designs. When viewing this watch head-on, it’s not hard to understand why. All the information contained on the dial—day, date, and month as well as the hours and minutes of each passing day—is artfully juxtaposed, easy-to-read and indelibly attractive.

Speaking of the dial, it’s taken on a heavy patina that we find absolutely delicious—an indication of a life well-lived.
