Why We Love it

For years, dual-time watches were either robust but relatively inelegant tool watches, or high-end, extremely expensive examples of haute horlogerie. There really wasn’t much ‘in-between’ territory.

In the past couple of decades, this has changed dramatically: There are now myriad GMT and other travel-type watches at various price points, especially at the affordable to mid-range end of the price spectrum.

Dating to the early 2000s, this particular Aerodyn Duo dual-time watch from Swiss marque Dubey & Schaldenbrand is priced extremely attractively considering its construction, functionality, and good looks. Housed in a 33mm stainless steel tonneau case with a signed crown and a polished bezel, it features a gloss black and ‘gilt’ dial with Art Deco-style ‘Arabic’ indices, matching cathedral hands, a second time zone indicator at 12 o’clock, a day/night indicator at 9 o’clock, an outer ‘railroad’ minute track, and a date sundial at 6 o’clock.

Elegant in the mold of a Frank Muller — itself a kind of contemporary adaptation of early 20th-century horological and design tropes — this timepiece turns a simple ETA 2892 automatic movement into the power station for a useful and unique travel complication: It can be set completely independently from the main time display, making for a quick and easy way to track a second time zone.

On its signed brown leather strap with a signed steel pin buckle, this Aerodyn Duo is begging to accompany its next owner around the globe.

Maybe that next owner is you?

Brand Story

+
Cabot Watch Company was established by Ray Mellor, a veteran of the British Merchant Navy during WWII. Following the end of hostilities, Mellor began his professional life as a cutlery and watch distributor, later establishing a retail network in the U.K. for Hamilton Watches. He worked his way up to managing director of Hamilton UK, gaining valuable government contracts for the American manufacturer.
In the early 1970s Hamilton ceased operations in the UK, giving Mellor just a few short months to shutter his shops and offices. Unemployed, he decided to embark upon a new horological adventure, naming his company after John Cabot, the famous Italian explorer who set out from Bristol in the late 15th century for North America.
Mellor’s connections with the British military meant he was able to quickly take over contracts that once went to Hamilton, supplying the different service arms with timepieces that included mechanical field watches, chronographs, divers, stopwatches, and more. The W10, the G10, the asymmetric chronograph, the Royal Navy Diver Automatic — such watches have since become legendary in the military watch community.
In 1996, Mellor sold his business to Silvermans Ltd, a London-based distributor of military kit. He continued to work for the new entity for 15 years, expanding CWC and earning new government contracts. Today, CWC has entered the public consciousness, expanding its remit from a simple government contractor to a producer of timepieces enjoyed by the general public — but all with a military inspiration at their heart.
