Why We Love it
–If you've been following us for any amount of time, you already know quite well that we have an affinity (some might use a stronger word) for DOXA, a Swiss brand that doesn't often get a lot of appreciation amongst collectors.
That said, most of the DOXAs you see us flaunting are of the steel tool watch variety - specifically their Sub 300 diver's watches from the late 1960s and early 1970s. These earned a special place in our founder's heart at a young age, and we often carry good ones in our inventory - as well as a small -ahem- stockpile in our own personal stash. Yet DOXA's history is rich with a slew of other impressive timepieces, going all the way back to their beginnings in 1889, a full sixteen years before Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex.
Indeed, DOXA earned a place of distinction with luxury consumers in the early 1900s with expertly engineered Swiss Pocket Watches, and earned a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Milan in 1906. A year later, DOXA introduced the world's first 8-Day movement specified for use in automobiles, and DOXA dash clocks began appearing in early cars from Mercedes Benz, Peugeot, and Bugatti.
Throughout the mid-20th Century, DOXA introduced a wide variety of timepieces, from consumer grade time-only to ornate ladies cocktail pieces, alarm clocks, precision cockpit instruments, and military-issued wristwatches. The 1940s and 50s saw a number of beautiful wrist chronographs introduced, and the one we have found here is nothing short of exceptional.
In virtually New Old Stock (NOS) condition, this beautiful steel chrono epitomizes the brand's mid-century design prowess, from its extremely legible silver-toned dial with dual color outer scales and telephone timing 30-minute register to its gold-toned feuille hands and elegant claw lugs. Powered by a Landeron 48 manually-winding chronograph movement, this DOXA has seen only a minimal amount of use in its 65+ years.
In our opinion, mid-century chronographs are some of the most desirable and beautiful timepieces in the realm, be it a Gallet, Rolex, Patek Philippe, or DOXA - and values on steel models in particular are beginning to climb. New Old Stock timepieces from this era are are true rarity, so don't miss the opportunity to snatch up something special!
