Corum Gondolo 'Lapis Lazuli'
Why We Love it
Why We Love it–
Swiss brand Corum has always forged its own path.
From its Romulus collection of Roman-inspired watches to its famed timepieces made out of gold coins, Corum’s wares are unique and eye-catching. Such is especially true of its shaped watches from the 1970s, a time when watch design — and industrial design in general — was going through radical changes in favor of bold shapes, bright colors, and fun accents.
This particular Corum is a 'Gondolo' model from circa the 1970s — and its a looker!
Coming in at 30mm in diameter with an 18k yellow gold 'stepped' case with a matching integrated, 'ribbed' bracelet, this piece features a gorgeous 'bark' finishing throughout and an always captivating, blue Lapis Lazuli stone dial with a matching 'dauphine' handset within.
Powered by a manually wound movement, this piece with its rectangular case, integrated bracelet, and slim profile, it’s a striking piece of design that stands out in a sea of round, same-same dive and sport watches.
Looking for a watch that’s slightly left-of-center from an under the radar brand? Look no further!
*Due to the design of this bracelet, sizing alterations may require custom work. Lead time after measurements are established is 4-6 weeks.*
Perhaps the most well known of Corum’s collections, however, is the Heritage Coin, a design that uses a U.S. gold coin such as a ‘Double Eagle’ as a substitute for a traditional watch case. U.S. Presidents George Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton have all worn this special timepiece — as has artist Andy Warhol.
The Golden Bridge, meanwhile, dates to 1980. Arranged in a linear fashion, the watch’s movement forms both the caliber as well as the bulk of the ‘dial,’ which is visible via a unique sapphire crystal. It’s watches like these that have kept Corum in the mind of collectors searching for unique horological experiences for over 70 years and counting.
