Why We Love it

Swiss brand Corum has always forged its own path.

From its Romulus collection of Roman-inspired watches to its famed timepieces made out of gold coins, Corum’s wares are unique and eye-catching. Such is especially true of its shaped watches from the 1970s, a time when watch design — and industrial design in general — was going through radical changes in favor of bold shapes, bright colors, and fun accents.

This particular Corum is a Buckingham model from the 1970s. With its rectangular case, integrated bracelet, and flat profile, it’s a striking piece of design that stands out in a sea of round, same-same dive and sport watches.

Housed in a 32mm stainless steel case with an acrylic crystal and a sapphire cabochon crown, it features a sunburst grey dial with a matching 'pencil' handset and a date window at 6:00. Paired to an integrated steel bracelet with a signed hidden deployant clasp and powered by an ultrathin, automatic movement, it’s a versatile piece that works well on both men’s and women’s wrists.

Looking for a watch that’s slightly left-of-center? Look no further!

Brand Story

+
Established in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1955 by Gaston Ries and his nephew René Bannwart, Corum makes unique and innovative timepieces such as the Golden Bridge and the Admiral, designs that put the watches’ movement front and center via innovative, transparent dials.
Perhaps the most well known of Corum’s collections, however, is the Heritage Coin, a design that uses a U.S. gold coin such as a ‘Double Eagle’ as a substitute for a traditional watch case. U.S. Presidents George Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton have all worn this special timepiece — as has artist Andy Warhol.
The Golden Bridge, meanwhile, dates to 1980. Arranged in a linear fashion, the watch’s movement forms both the caliber as well as the bulk of the ‘dial,’ which is visible via a unique sapphire crystal. It’s watches like these that have kept Corum in the mind of collectors searching for unique horological experiences for over 70 years and counting.
