Why We Love it

While the Swiss and the Japanese are well known for their watchmaking prowess, it’s the Germans who, for the last 30 years, have secretly been crafting some of the best modern timepieces in the world.

Nomos, based in the town of Glashütte, is a brand that exemplifies the German design sensibilities. Based upon the principles of the Bauhaus school — think “form follows function” — their simple yet creative watches are a masterclass in utilitarian (but beautiful) craftsmanship. One of their best-loved designs is the Club Campus, which makes use of the famed “California” dial (the upper half of the face features Arabic numerals and hash marks, while the lower half has Roman numerals and hash marks). This was a favorite (and trademarked) design of Rolex in the 1940s.

This particular Club Campus Neomatik 39 features a 39.5mm stainless steel case, a domed sapphire crystal, a polished bezel, and a gorgeous, midnight-blue Super-LumiNova dial with a matching sword handset and sub-seconds counter at 6 o’clock. Its untouched case is in excellent condition, showing only light signs of handling wear.

Powering the watch is the excellent, in-house Nomos Neomatik Calibre DUW 3001, a slim automatic movement with 43 hours of power reserve. Further, the watch comes equipped with a two-piece, navy nylon strap plus its receipt, warranty card dated to 2015, travel case, microfiber cloth, and outer box.

We may love vintage at Analog/Shift, but we make a clear exception for anything from Nomos!

Brand Story

+
The little town of Glashütte, situated close to the eastern edge of Germany and home to only 7,000 people, is the birthplace of German watchmaking. Glashütte is home to brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Mühle, and Glashütte Original, all incredible brands in their own right. But there is another brand that calls this little area of Germany home, and that is NOMOS.

NOMOS was founded by Roland Schwertner on January 10th, 1990, two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the next 15 years the company created multiple patents for watch components--like date mechanisms and power reserve indicators--all in preparation for the day they would build their own movements in-house. That day came in 2005 when the firm released the Tangomat, powered by an automatic caliber all their own, and at a price point that virtually no other manufacturer could touch.

As the years rolled on, NOMOS continued in that spirit of affordable self-sufficiency, one of creating in-house movements and selling their watches at prices that belie the care and quality of construction that go into producing them.
