Why We Love it
–In 1881, watchmaker Achilles Ditesheim opened a workshop for the production of pocket watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds, that horological hotbed that's produced such big name brands as Gallet and Heuer, among others. His brothers Léopold and Isidore joined him in 1886. By 1900, the brothers Ditesheim began to produce wristwatches.
In 1905, the brothers moved production to a new facility and christened their brand Movado, which means "always in motion" in Esperanto. Even in the early days, watches produced by the brothers garnered many awards, surpassing watches of their rivals at competitions. Movado produced incredible mechanical timepieces through the 20th century, gaining notoriety for the sophistication of the equipment and technology they employed, including electric tools.
By the 1950s the brand was making strides in the production of water-resistant and automatic wristwatches. The brand produced its first water-resistant wristwatch in 1935 and its first automatic wristwatch, the Tempomatic, in 1945. Movado had registered the patent for the Tempomatic in 1943, but did not release it for commercial consumption until two years later.
Starting in the early 1960s, Movado released the Super Sub Sea line of waterproof watches. The standout of this collection was the Super Sub Sea Chronograph or Chronodiver--a hybrid chronograph/diver that shared a movement (the Calibre 146) with chronographs made by Zenith, who bought Movado in 1969. But Movado also released a Super Sub Sea diver--the Super Sub Sea 300 Tempo-Matic, that last word signifying that it contained an automatic movement.
This particular Super Sub Sea 300 features a sharp-beveled 40mm contract cushion case with pointed crown guards, a 60-click, fully-graduated, black and white acrylic bezel, an acrylic crystal, a signed screw-down crown, a date function at 3 o’clock, tritium markers, a matching handset and a zesty orange dial that just screams vintage dive watch!
Powered by a self-winding Zenith Calibre 2552PC movement, this Movado Sub comes fitted to an Analog:Shift Bering White Saffiano Leather Strap with a stainless steel pin buckle — yes, we fully endorse wearing vintage divers on leather!
There’s no better way to describe this Super Sub Sea other than it is effortlessly cool.
What’s more, this piece has some Analog:Shift provenance as it was once owned by none other than our fearless leader, James Lamdin, which makes this vintage diver even cooler — and he didn’t pay us to say that, either...
Brand Story

Brand Story
+Production from that point on proved how true the name brand was—it means "always in motion" in Esperanto. Throughout the 20th century Movado produced incredible mechanical timepieces. They gained notoriety for the sophistication of the equipment and technology they employed, including electric tools.
Unlike many of their counterparts, Movado's movements were designed and manufactured in-house.
In the late 1960s, they were acquired by Zenith, and enjoyed perhaps their greatest period of success as the subsidiary of that brand. Their chronographs (which used the famous Zenith El Primero movement), particularly, were successful sellers. But the extent of their offerings didn’t end there. They also made killer dress watches like the one we have here.
