–The love for rare and beautiful objects here at Analog:Shift isn’t limited to watches. Our endless treasure hunt frequently wanders into vintage clocks, pocket knives, lighters, old-world ashtrays, diving equipment, desk sculptures, and other wonderfully unnecessary objects that tug at our nostalgic heartstrings. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all.
Which brings us to this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sculpture by British design house Compulsion Gallery. Introduced in 1954, the production 300 SL grew directly out of Mercedes-Benz’s successful W194 competition car and quickly became one of the defining sports cars of the decade. Its tubular spaceframe necessitated those now-famous roof-hinged “Gullwing” doors, while its fuel-injected straight-six made it seriously quick for the period. Today, the combination of engineering, racing pedigree, and that extraordinary shape has made the 300 SL one of the most coveted postwar automobiles.
The sculpture captures plenty of the details that make the real thing so recognizable: the long hood, compact greenhouse, prominent three-pointed star, distinctive side vents, and beautifully rounded bodywork. Produced during the 1990s or early 2000s, it uses Compulsion Gallery’s signature construction, with a high-density resin core thermal-plated in lead-free pewter before being hand-polished and lacquered. The result has a satisfyingly substantial weight and cool metallic feel, with a finish that suits the 300 SL particularly well.
Compulsion Gallery specialized in oversized automotive and sporting sculptures before eventually disappearing, and its pieces have since developed a following among petrolheads and automobilia collectors. For a car that has long transcended transportation to become a genuine design object, the 300 SL seems particularly appropriate rendered as sculpture.
All the beauty of a Gullwing, with considerably less maintenance!
