Why We Love it

Well known to watch aficionados are names such as the Nautilus and the Royal Oak, those famed early examples of the ‘luxury sports watch.’

But there were other such timepieces with integrated bracelets designed in the 1970s and 1980s, of which Chopard’s St. Moritz was one. Recently reimagined in the form of the brand’s Alpine Eagle, the original St. Mortiz was a celebration of the famed Swiss alpine ski resort, based around the principles of utilitarian design and ‘form follows function.’

Another example of the brand’s pioneering work in ladies’ luxury sports watches was the Gstaad. Available in 24mm or 32mm in precious metals, this collection — likewise named after a Swiss ski resort — is perhaps less known than the St. Mortiz, but represents a wonderful alternative to watches such as Cartier’s Tank or Bulgari’s Serpenti for someone searching for a refined, elegant timepiece.

This particular Gstaad is features a 24mm 18K yellow gold case with a factory diamond-set yellow gold bezel, a gloss white dial with diamond indices, a matching yellow gold handset, and a beautiful matching yellow gold multi-link bracelet with a signed hidden deployant clasp - also set with factory diamonds.

Powered by a reliable quartz movement, this 1990s gem is ready for a night out on the town — especially a glitzy ski town in mid-winter!

Brand Story

+
Established in 1860 in Solvilier, Switzerland, Chopard has been making watches and jewelry for over 160 years, with clients that include Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Known for its “Happy Diamond” watch in which diamonds appear to float on the dial, the brand boasts its own movement manufacture in Fleurier and a headquarters in Geneva.

If you’re interested in cars, you probably know Chopard for its longtime sponsorship of the famed Mille Miglia race, with which it has been associated since 1988. It’s also the official timekeeper of the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, a title it has held since 2002.

Today, Chopard’s Alpine Eagle — based upon the St. Moritz watch from the 1980s — sits alongside the likes of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus in the “luxury sports watch” category, proving that the maison is more than just a purveyor of fine jewelry, but also a first-class watchmaker.
