Details

Before dive computers, before digital gauges, and even before many purpose-built dive watches, underwater exploration relied on simple mechanical tools — instruments that translated the pressures of the deep into information a diver could trust.

The Calypso wrist depth gauge is one of those wonderfully analog solutions.

Produced during the golden age of recreational diving, this compact mechanical depth gauge measures depth up to 200 feet, allowing divers to monitor their descent in real time. The bold black dial is highly legible, with large numerals and a sweeping indicator needle that responds directly to water pressure. At six o’clock, the unmistakable Aqua Lung logo reminds us of the era when Jacques Cousteau’s pioneering equipment was helping define modern scuba diving (and dive watches!).

The design is charmingly straightforward: a stainless steel case, domed crystal, and a dial layout that prioritizes clarity above all else. Unlike a traditional watch, the gauge simply tells you how deep you are — which, underwater, is arguably the more important question.
Fitted here on a grey-and-black striped military pass-through strap, the piece wears comfortably on the wrist and captures the rugged, exploratory spirit of mid-century dive gear.

Part instrument, part artifact of early scuba culture, the Calypso depth gauge is a reminder of a time when exploring the ocean required little more than a tank, a regulator, and a bit of mechanical ingenuity.
