Why We Love it

Mid-century Bulova had a knack for making everyday watches feel architectural. During the 1940s and ’50s, the American brand produced a wide range of thoughtfully designed dress pieces — watches that balanced affordability with surprising creativity in case shapes, dial textures, and applied markers.

This 1959 L9 (L=1950s, 9 = '59) Bulova dress watch is a perfect example of that spirit.

Housed in a 14K yellow gold case measuring 33mm, the watch immediately stands out thanks to its sharply sculpted angular lugs, giving the otherwise classic round case a bold, almost modernist profile. There’s a hint of WPA-era Depression Modern design in the geometry — clean lines, purposeful shapes, and just enough flourish to keep things interesting.

The dial is equally compelling. Rendered in a soft cream tone with a textured inner ring, it features large, stylized applied 'dart' markers that catch the light beautifully. Slender 'alpha' hands sweep across the dial, while a sub-seconds register at six o’clock adds both visual balance and mechanical charm.

At just 6.3mm thick, the watch wears slim and elegant on the wrist, powered by a 17-jewel manual-winding 11AF movement that reflects Bulova’s long tradition of reliable watchmaking. Paired with a brown leather strap and gold-tone pin buckle, this piece captures the understated sophistication of late-1950s American design.

Angular, refined, and quietly distinctive — proof that even the simplest dress watch can have real personality.

Brand Story

+
The story of Bulova is deeply entwined with American manufacturing. Its founder, a Czech immigrant named Joseph Bulova, was inspired by the advances Ford made at his Highland Park, Michigan, factory. In 1912, Bulova built a factory in Biel, Switzerland, using Ford’s principles of mass production.

The brand was among the first to offer a wide range of men's wristwatches, with a distinctive visual style that — thanks to its innovative advertising and relocation to Astoria, Queens — became fixed in the American imagination. Bulova took over offices in a skyscraper on 5th Avenue in Manhattan and installed an observatory on its roof to measure universal time. In the workshop down below, watchmakers timed the watches they were working on against readings taken in the observatory.

The watches that Bulova produced were varied, from handsome three-handers to divers and even chronographs. Bulova produced its first chronographs in the 1940s — single-button affairs with screw-on bezels. Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70's, Bulova honed its mastery of such watches.

However, perhaps the brand’s single most important innovation was the Accutron, introduced in the 1960s, a timepiece that used an electric tuning fork in place of a traditional balance wheel. Following on the heels of the Hamilton Electric of 1957, the Accutron featured a guaranteed accuracy of two seconds per day — much better accuracy than that of a contemporary mechanical watch. (The Accutron line was later spun off and relaunched as its own brand in 2020.)

In 1971, a Bulova chronograph accompanied the Apollo 15 crew into space. When the crystal on astronaut David Scott’s Speedmaster popped off, he strapped on his Bulova, making it the only privately worn watch to ever have been worn on the Moon. (It was subsequently auctioned off for more than $1.625M.)

Currently owned by Citizen Group and headquartered in New York City, Bulova continues to make watches inspired by its long American heritage.
