The love for rare and beautiful objects here at Analog:Shift isn’t limited to watches. Our endless treasure hunt frequently wanders into vintage clocks, pocket knives, lighters, old-world ashtrays, diving equipment, desk sculptures, and other wonderfully unnecessary objects that tug at our nostalgic heartstrings. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all.

Which brings us to this wonderfully characterful BMW 328 Roadster sculpture by British design house Compulsion Gallery. Introduced in 1936, the 328 was one of the great European sports cars of the pre-war period, combining lightweight construction, a streamlined body, and a sophisticated 2.0-liter inline-six. More importantly, it could race. The 328 scored class victories at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, helping establish BMW’s reputation for building genuinely sporting automobiles long before the arrival of the M badge.

This sculpture captures the little BMW in full competition mode, complete with driver and passenger tucked behind the tiny windscreens. The long hood, twin-kidney grille, separate fenders, running boards, and wonderfully upright cockpit give it enormous personality. Produced during the 1990s or early 2000s, the piece uses Compulsion Gallery’s signature construction: a high-density resin core, thermally plated in lead-free pewter, then hand-polished and lacquered for the satisfying weight and cool metallic feel of solid metal.

Compulsion Gallery specialized in Star Wars, automotive, and sporting sculptures before eventually disappearing, and its pieces have since developed a following among fanboys, petrolheads, and automobilia collectors. The 328 is an especially charming subject, capturing an era when racing involved leather helmets, tiny windscreens, skinny tires, and considerable bravery.

A little piece of pre-war BMW history, no goggles required!

Brand Story

+
Compulsion Gallery was a British design house best known for its substantial automotive, sporting, and Star Wars sculptures, particularly detailed recreations of legendary racing cars and movie characters. Produced primarily during the 1990s and early 2000s, its pieces were typically made from high-density cast resin, thermal-plated in lead-free pewter, then hand-polished and lacquered to achieve the weight and appearance of solid metal. With subjects ranging from Darth Vader and Formula 1 cars to classic sports and competition machinery, Compulsion Gallery transformed motorsport and movie history into handsome pieces of desk sculpture. The company is no longer in business, giving its distinctive creations an added appeal among collectors of vintage automobilia and design objects.
