Why We Love it

Some watches tell two time zones. Very few do it with this much style.

This remarkable Baume & Mercier Dual Time dates from an era when super sonic travel was becoming increasingly glamorous and watchmakers were finding creative ways to serve an emerging international clientele. Rather than relying on additional hands or crowded displays, Baume & Mercier took a more elegant approach: two entirely separate sub dials, each independently adjustable and capable of displaying a different time zone.

The result is both practical and visually captivating.

Housed in a perfectly proportioned 30.5mm square 18K yellow gold case, this watch immediately stands apart from its contemporaries. The clean geometry of the case provides a sophisticated architectural frame for what is undoubtedly the star of the show: its extraordinary dial.

The lapis dial is a  deep midnight blue, sprinkled with delicate gold flecks that evoke a star-filled night sky. Floating within this celestial backdrop are two circular time displays, each framed by Roman numerals and powered by its own set of hands. The arrangement is beautifully balanced, creating a design that feels equal parts modernist artwork and horological instrument.

Twin crowns positioned on either side of the case allow each display to be set independently, making it possible to track two locations simultaneously—a feature that remains as useful today as it was decades ago. Whether monitoring home and office, New York and Geneva, or simply admiring the ingenuity of the design, the watch offers a uniquely elegant solution to a timeless problem.

Inside beats the manually wound Baume & Mercier Caliber BM550, a 17-jewel movement that powers this uncommon complication with traditional mechanical charm. Completing the package is a dark blue Baume & Mercier alligator strap secured by a yellow gold pin buckle.

Vintage Baume & Mercier often flies under the radar, but pieces like this remind us just how creative the brand could be. Equal parts dress watch, travel watch, and conversation piece, it occupies a category entirely its own.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1830 in Switzerland, Baume & Mercier is one of watchmaking's oldest continuously operating names. Long known for producing elegant, accessible luxury timepieces, the brand built its reputation on a combination of refined design, reliable Swiss movements, and strong value.

Throughout the 20th century, Baume & Mercier embraced changing tastes—from Art Deco dress watches to the bold integrated-bracelet designs of the 1970s and 1980s—while maintaining a focus on everyday wearability. Today, vintage Baume & Mercier watches are increasingly appreciated for their distinctive styling, quality craftsmanship, and often-overlooked place in Swiss watchmaking history.
