–The love for rare and beautiful objects here at Analog:Shift isn’t limited to watches. Our endless treasure hunt frequently wanders into vintage clocks, pocket knives, lighters, old-world ashtrays, diving equipment, desk sculptures, and other wonderfully unnecessary objects that tug at our nostalgic heartstrings. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all.
Which brings us to this fantastic Audi Auto Union Streamliner sculpture by British design house Compulsion Gallery. The original Auto Union racers of the 1930s were among the most extraordinary machines of the pre-war Grand Prix era: brutally powerful, mid-engined Silver Arrows piloted by drivers including Bernd Rosemeyer, Hans Stuck, and Tazio Nuvolari. For high-speed circuits and record attempts, their already radical engineering could be wrapped in slippery streamlined bodywork, enclosing the wheels and transforming the car into something that looked decades ahead of its time.
This sculpture captures that wonderful shape beautifully, from its long, low body and enclosed wheels to the tiny open cockpit and wonderfully minimal front end. Produced during the 1990s or early 2000s, it uses Compulsion Gallery’s signature construction, with a high-density resin core thermal-plated in lead-free pewter before being hand-polished and lacquered. The pewter finish seems particularly appropriate here, giving the entire piece the appearance of a miniature Silver Arrow.
Compulsion Gallery specialized in Star Wars (!), automotive, and sporting sculptures before eventually disappearing, and its pieces have since developed a following among fanboys, petrolheads, and automobilia collectors. This one combines early Grand Prix history, extraordinary engineering, Art Deco-era streamlining, and one of the strangest and most beautiful shapes ever created in the pursuit of speed.
Nearly a century later, it still looks like the future.
