Why We Love it
–One name: Gérald Genta.
When Audemars Piguet unveiled the Royal Oak in 1972, it didn't simply launch a new watch—it created an entirely new category. Genta's now-legendary design transformed the humble steel sports watch into a luxury object, pairing an octagonal bezel inspired by a diving helmet with an integrated bracelet that remains one of the finest in watchmaking. More than fifty years later, nearly every luxury sports watch owes something to the Royal Oak.
What's remarkable, however, is how well the design translates beyond its original form. The Royal Oak's sharp architecture, alternating finishes, and instantly recognizable silhouette possess a rare versatility, looking equally compelling in steel, gold, oversized proportions, or—as seen here—an elegant, jewelry-inspired execution.
This particular Royal Oak pairs a 25mm white gold case with a breathtaking pale blue mother-of-pearl dial that shifts subtly with changing light. Applied diamond hour markers add sparkle without overwhelming the design, while a diamond-set inner octagonal frame echoes the shape of the iconic bezel above. The combination of cool white gold, shimmering mother-of-pearl, and brilliant-cut diamonds creates a look that feels both luxurious and surprisingly modern.
Just as importantly, all of the design elements that made the Royal Oak famous remain intact. The faceted bezel, integrated bracelet, and geometric case architecture are every bit as present here as they are on the larger references favored by collectors. This is unmistakably a Royal Oak—simply interpreted through a more refined and jewelry-forward lens.
The result is one of the most compelling expressions of the Royal Oak design language: a watch that balances industrial edge with elegance, proving that Genta's masterpiece works beautifully at any size.
For those who appreciate great design, diamonds are simply the finishing touch.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+In fact, both Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet came from long lines of watchmakers, and made their reputations long before the Royal Oak was conceived. Their reputations rested on their ability to create incredibly elegant timepieces in numerous styles. While some of these timepieces were simple, elegant dress watches, others were one-off or short-series pieces produced at the rate of a handful per year. (Some years, Audemars Piguet only produced a few hundred watches in total.) Calendar watches, chronographs, minute repeaters — all the delights of haute horlogerie were part and parcel of the AP oeuvre long before the Royal Oak made its debut in 1972.
Technical innovations from AP abound and include the first minute-repeating movement, the first skeleton watch and an ultra-thin automatic tourbillon. Newer collections, such as the Code 11.59 from 2019, see the maison continue to develop new and exciting watches and calibers, the likes of which aren’t based upon tired horological tropes from models past. (Though if vintage reissues are your bag, AP does have a special “Remaster” line — currently consisting of just one model — that reimagines some of its classical, complicated pieces from the mid-20th century.)
