Why We Love it
–Tired of the standard horological fare? Looking for a timepiece with a certain je ne sais quois....or should we say
das gewisse etwas?
Either way, we’ve got you covered.
German watchmaking offers some of the most innovative design and construction on the scene today, and Glashütte Original ranks among their finest manufactures. With an impressive catalog of models ranging from tribute models celebrating the brand's heritage in watchmaking since 1845 to cutting-edge avant-garde design and high complication, GO offers a wealth of horological know-how that flies under the radar in typical German fashion. For us, the PanoMatic collection - particuarly the PanoMaticLunar range - are the tops.
Incorporating the brand's signature outsize date display with a moonphase register in a steel case measuring 42mm, this particular example - a Reference 1-90-02-36-12-05 - features a signed crown, recessed corrector pusher at 1 o’clock and a sapphire crystal.
Needless to say, the case is intentionally minimal in order to frame the brand’s Bauhaus expression. The gray ruthenium dial features an off-center subsidiary register with a matching ‘dauphine’ handset, applied polished indices along with an overlapping small constant-seconds. Positioned at 2 o’clock, the moonphase aperture sits above the digital date display. Unlike other outsize date functions produced in Saxony, GO's version features two discs displaying the date on the same plane, interlocking seamlessly.
Powering the watch is the Glashütte Original Calibre 90-02
automatic microrotor movement with 47 jewels and a power reserve of 42 hours. Finely decorated with hand-engraved designs, beveled edges, and Geneva stripes, it’s visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback. Finishing the package is a black alligator leather strap with a signed, stainless steel deployant buckle and a quick-release system.
In superb condition throughout, this stunning contemporary offers German design and manufacture in a stainless steel package - and is thus available for a price point untouchable by its contemporaries!
Brand Story
+
Brand Story
+Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the GUB was privatized and subsequently purchased by Bavarian businessman Heinz W. Pfeifer. Pfeifer restructured the firm, eventually selling it to the Swatch Group. The name given to the new entity, Glashütte Original, is a nod to the pocket watches produced in the German town in the 19th century, which bore this as a signature to deter counterfeiting.
Today’s ‘G.O’ creates up to 95% of its watch components, preserving the savoir-faire of its German namesake. From highly complicated calendar movements to stylish dress watches and tough-as-nails divers, Glashütte Original’s wares are a testament to Germany’s watchmaking achievements — achievements that rival its Swiss counterparts in execution and finesse.
