The Annual Calendar is a complication invented by Patek Philippe.
While it plays second string to the Perpetual Calendar in the minds of most collectors, the reality is that the construction of the calendar mechanism is equally challenging and in some cases requires even more components.
Such is the case with Patek's Reference 5035, as presented here. The 5035 was Patek's first Annual Calendar model launched in 1996, and set the bar for all that followed - including those from competitors. This particular example, a 5035G, features a solid 18k white gold case and is fitted with a salmon toned dial - one of the most desirable configurations in fine Swiss watchmaking.
Interestingly, the 5035 has yet to catch on as a collectable - something we are sure will not last long - and examples such as this one can be had for a fraction the price of other more hyped models - regardless of complication. Treated to a full mechanical overhaul and accompanied by its original brown alligator strap and signed white gold pin buckle, this lovely piece can be had for less than the retail price of a new Aquanaut.
We're not saying there's such a thing as a "sure thing" in watch collecting, but whether or not there is, if you want this watch half as much as we do, don't hesitate to make a move, it won't last!
The Patek Philippe Story
Patek Philippe.
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few luxury brands in the world carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.
Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told ‘You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”
Well, you know the rest.
