–Why We Love It
Sometimes, you just need a little two-tone in your life.
With renewed appreciation for boldly colorful watches in the modern sports watch segment (Rainbow Daytona, anyone?) collectors are also finding new love for the once-maligned two-tone style, with new options from brands such as Girard-Perregaux, Tudor, Audemars Piguet, Omega, and Rolex proving to be hot sellers. Along with the modern stuff, vintage models are getting a new lease on life, with the unfortunate 1980s style tropes falling away.
This particular model, a two-tone Reference 1675/3 GMT has a bit of flash, while still subtle enough to remain under the radar for most. Featuring a glossy black 'nipple' dial with outstanding patina, this early version of the two-tone GMT also features an applied Coronet and non-quickset movement. It also shows a strong case, matching black and gold bezel insert, and solid link bracelet with 18k center links.
We're not saying this is the best look for the classic GMT Master, but we're not saying it isn't, either...
The Story
The Reference 1675/3, released in the late 1970s, provided a fresh new look to the GMT line. The combination of steel and gold perfectly encapsulated the preppy stye that prevailed in that period. Moreover, this shifted Rolex into the luxury sphere, which established an upward sales trend that infused much needed cash flow into the manufacture.
Visually and technically, the 1675/3 stands out from other iterations of the GMT-Master.
The glossy dial and colorful bezel give the watch a sleek appearance that’s magnified by the gold detailing on the crown, bezel, bracelet and handset.
