Cartier watches

While best known for haute joaillerie, Cartier has long been a powerhouse of watch design. In 1907, Louis Cartier created one of the first purpose-built wristwatches for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, paving the way for icons like the Tank, which has since evolved into countless forms — from the classic Tank Louis to the elegant Cintrée. Beloved by cultural heavyweights from Rudolph Valentino to Andy Warhol, Cartier's creations blur the line between jewelry and serious watchmaking. It's one of the few maisons that commands respect from both style lovers and die-hard collectors alike — a balance you’ll see clearly in our curated selection of vintage and pre-owned Cartier below.

BRAND STORY

Despite being a purveyor of haute joaillerie, Cartier has a long-standing tradition of watchmaking.

It began in 1907, when Louis Cartier designed one of the first wristwatches for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Not long after came the Tank, introduced in 1917 and said to be inspired by the Renault FT-17 tanks of World War I. The first six pieces were reportedly gifted to General John J. Pershing and his staff. With lugs modeled after tank treads — integrated into the case via brancards — the design was both utilitarian and refined. By 1920, production had grown to thirty-three, and by the end of the 20th century, Tank variants numbered in the hundreds of thousands, making it Cartier’s largest line.

The Tank Louis arrived in 1922, soon followed by the Tank Chinoise, a square-cased variation influenced by Asian design trends of the era. Each version — from the original to the sleek Cintrée — carried Louis Cartier’s love of clean lines and symmetry. Cultural icons like Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable, Andy Warhol, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis were all fans.

Other signature models, including the Santos and Pasha, have also earned cult status. Few jewelry maisons have achieved such reverence from watch collectors — Cartier remains an outlier that blends elegance with true horological pedigree.
