Why We Love it
–You’re looking at one of Gérald Genta’s earliest notable watch designs.
That’s right — before sketching the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet or the Nautilus for Patek Philippe, the young Swiss designer created the White Shadow for Universal Genève. Elegant, innovative, and surprisingly comfortable, it remains one of the most interesting vintage dress watches of its era — both aesthetically and technically.
Thanks to its record-thin automatic movement, the White Shadow wears like silk on the wrist. Its cushion-shaped case is impressively slim yet broad enough to feel substantial, striking a balance between refinement and presence. Universal Genève produced several variations over the years, but this particular example ranks among the handsomest we’ve encountered.
Dating back to the 1970s, it features a 35mm stainless steel tonneau case with an acrylic crystal, a signed crown, and a matching linked bracelet with a signed clasp. The softly patinated grey dial showcases applied baton indices, a matching steel sword handset, and a discreet date window at three o’clock. Powering it all is Universal Genève’s self-winding micro-rotor movement — a technical marvel that allowed for such a svelte profile.
There are plenty of fine vintage dress watches out there, but few with a résumé like this one. The White Shadow is elegant, innovative, and undeniably cool — proof that even early in his career, Genta knew precisely how to make a lasting impression.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+In the brand's earliest days, it established itself as a manufacturer of in-house movements of exceptional quality. Universal Genève was also among the first watch manufactures to specialize in wristwatches. In 1897, Louis Eduoard Berthoud — noted designer of complicated watch movements — joined the company. His involvement ensured Universal Genève's supremacy in the development of complicated watches in the 20th Century.
It was under Berthoud's leadership that the brand's reputation as a producer of chronographs was solidified. Chronographs, in particular — namely the Compur and the Compax lines — attracted the attention of watch aficionados, aviators, and militaries around the world. Even the Royal Family of the Netherlands issued a royal charter for Universal Genève to outfit the Dutch military with its chronographs.
Universal Genève was also once responsible for some of the most beautiful dress and time-only watches of the mid-20th century. From the purpose-driven Polerouter to the ornate Cabriolet, UG had a touch all its own and breathed incredible beauty and craftsmanship into every piece they produced. Although the brand is currently dormant, there is tremendous interest in collector circles for vintage models, and is regarded very highly by horological historians and design enthusiasts alike.
