Ulysse Nardin Freak X 'Gumball 3000'

There are unconventional watches, and then there is the Ulysse Nardin Freak. When the original appeared in 2001, it dispensed with the traditional dial and hands, turning the movement itself into the time display. More than two decades later, that idea still feels radical, making the Freak an especially appropriate partner for something as gloriously excessive as the Gumball 3000.

Created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gumball 3000, the Freak X Gumball 3000 brings together two worlds united by a shared enthusiasm for mechanical performance and for breaking convention. Appropriately, production was limited to just 150 pieces worldwide.

The watch is housed in a lightweight 43mm Carbonium® case with black DLC-coated titanium elements, giving the already futuristic Freak X an appropriately technical appearance. Against all that black, vivid orange accents reference Gumball 3000’s signature color, extending across the time display and onto the integrated orange rubber strap.

Of course, the real action happens where you’d normally expect to find a dial. The Freak famously does without conventional hands. Instead, its rotating flying carousel movement serves as the minute indication, completing one rotation every hour, while a separate pointer indicates the hours. Orange Super-LumiNova accents make the unusual display surprisingly legible while emphasizing the watch’s mechanical architecture.

Powering it is Ulysse Nardin’s self-winding Calibre UN-230, featuring silicon technology that has played such an important role in the manufacture's modern history. Its oversized silicon balance operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, while the movement delivers an impressive 72-hour power reserve.

The combination feels particularly appropriate. Gumball 3000 has spent decades turning the road trip into automotive theater, while Ulysse Nardin transformed a basic time display into mechanical theater. Neither has ever shown much interest in subtlety for subtlety’s sake.

This example is number 137 of the 150 pieces produced and is paired with its original orange rubber strap and black DLC titanium folding buckle. Better still, it comes as a highly complete set with its inner and outer boxes, warranty card, and original hang tags.

The Freak X Gumball 3000 isn’t a traditional sports watch, nor is it trying to be. Carbonium, silicon, a movement that doubles as the hands, and an electric-orange strap make that abundantly clear.

Founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, Ulysse Nardin built its reputation not on conventional wristwatches, but on precision. The manufacture became particularly celebrated for its marine chronometers, supplying highly accurate navigational instruments to navies and merchant vessels worldwide. That maritime heritage remains an important part of the brand’s identity, but it tells only half the story.

Modern Ulysse Nardin is considerably more rebellious. Beginning in the late 20th century, the manufacture became known for ambitious complications and unconventional displays, culminating in the launch of the groundbreaking Freak in 2001. With no conventional dial, crown, or hands, and a movement that rotated to indicate the time, the Freak helped redefine what a mechanical watch could look like. Ulysse Nardin was also an early pioneer in the use of silicon components, technology that would eventually become widespread throughout Swiss watchmaking.

That combination of old-school chronometric expertise and experimental engineering continues to define Ulysse Nardin today. Few manufactures can credibly trace their history to 19th-century marine navigation while producing watches as unapologetically futuristic as the Freak.

We generally ship our products via FedEx, fully insured, within 5 business days of purchase. An adult signature is required for receipt of all packages for insurance purposes. Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
