Why We Love it

The 1970s were a golden age for watch designers willing to experiment with shape, texture, and materials. Round cases gave way to octagons, rectangles, and geometric forms that looked as though they had arrived from the future. This NOS (new old stock) Royce is a perfect example of that spirit.

If you've never heard of Royce before, we wouldn't blame you. While the brand dates back to the 1920s, it spent decades quietly producing reliable Swiss watches with quality cases and robust movements before ultimately falling victim to the Quartz Crisis, much like countless other independent manufacturers. Produced during the mid-1970s by Royce—the sister brand to Eska, founded by Silvan Kocher's S. Kocher & Co.—this reference captures the era's fascination with bold design while remaining remarkably wearable today. Royce often served as the company's export-focused label, particularly in the United States, and watches like this demonstrate that the brand was every bit as adventurous as its more recognized contemporaries.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the dial. Crafted from genuine tiger's eye, its bands of golden brown and deep amber shift dramatically with changing light, creating a sense of movement even when the hands stand still. No two tigers eye dials are exactly alike, making each example effectively unique. Paired with the stepped octagonal case, the effect is unmistakably 1970s—and wonderfully so.

It's easy to see why collectors occasionally compare watches like this to the famous stone-dial pieces favored by Andy Warhol. The architectural case, minimalist layout, and natural stone dial all evoke the same glamorous intersection of watchmaking, jewelry, and design that defined the decade.

Measuring 38mm across without the crown, the gold-tone stepped case wears with surprising presence. A framed date window at 3 o'clock provides just enough functionality, while inside beats the reliable A. Schild AS 2063 automatic movement, a robust Swiss caliber that powered countless quality watches of the period.

Fitted to a rich brown leather strap, this Royce feels less like a traditional wristwatch and more like a piece of wearable design.

A perfect example of why the 1970s proved that a watch could be functional, fashionable, and a little bit groovy. Rooted in the glamorous disco era, this fabulous tiger's-eye Royce feels every bit as relevant today as it did nearly fifty years ago.

Brand Story

+
Founded in the 1920s, Royce was a Swiss watch brand operated by S. Kocher & Co., the same company behind Eska. While Eska occupied the higher end of the market, Royce often served as the firm's export-focused label, particularly in the United States. Known for producing reliable watches with quality Swiss movements and well-executed cases, the brand quietly built a reputation for solid craftsmanship before ultimately succumbing to the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s. Today, vintage Royce watches are appreciated for their distinctive designs, strong value, and glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of Swiss watchmaking history.
