Why We Love it

The Aquanaut may be one of the most important modern luxury sport watches on the market.

The Reference 5060J, launched in 1996 for the 20th anniversary of the Nautilus, was a sort of transitional watch. Borrowing features from the Nautilus but doing away with the famed case “ears” of that porthole-inspired model and adding lugs, it provided the basis for the Reference 5060A in 1997, the first model actually bearing the Aquanaut name. The Aquanaut itself would go on to form the basis of a full collection of luxury sports watches that provided the entry point into the Patek Philippe catalog.

This particular Aquanaut, a Reference 5165A, dates to back to the late 2000's and is virtually identical to the more commonly known 5167A, but features a slightly downsized 38mm stainless steel case, making it a rarer variant — and our favorite! Like its 40mm brother, the 5165A features sapphire crystal, a lovely anthracite textured hobnail dial with printed indices and a matching handset, and Patek's Calibre 324 SC automatic movement with date function. It comes outfitted to a signed black textured rubber strap with a signed stainless steel deployant clasp.

This example remains in excellent condition throughout, ready to accompany its next owner on globe-trotting adventures with class and style. We truly love the slightly downscale and demure alternative to its popular larger sibling — try it out and see for yourself!

Brand Story

+
Patek Philippe.

Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few luxury brands in the world carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer.  They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told ‘You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
