Gérald Genta Octagonal 'Cushion' Skeleton

Before Gérald Genta became a watch brand, Gérald Genta became one of watchmaking’s most consequential designers. The Royal Oak, Nautilus, and Ingenieur SL made his name. Still, the watches produced under his own signature reveal something more personal: an affection for unusual shapes, exotic materials, complicated movements, and watches that frequently blurred the boundary between horology and jewelry.

This Gérald Genta Reference G.1448, dating to circa 1990s, is a particularly beautiful example. Its compact approximately 32mm octagonal case combines contrasting tones of gold, framing a broad silver-toned chapter ring with dramatically elongated black Roman numerals. At the center, virtually everything disappears. The dial has been opened to reveal the hand-skeletonized mechanical movement beneath, its bridges extensively engraved and reduced to delicate ribbons of metal. Black hands float above the mechanism, allowing the movement's architecture to become the decoration.

Turn it over, and the performance continues. A large sapphire exhibition window reveals the reverse of the skeletonized hand-wound movement, while the solid caseback provides a frame for the miniature mechanical sculpture within. A dark cabochon, likely onyx, set into the crown adds another wonderfully Genta-esque jewelry detail.

The watch is paired with a black lizard strap and yellow-gold pin buckle, a restrained combination that wisely leaves the elaborate case and movement to do the talking.

Small, precious, mechanically intricate, and slightly eccentric, this is Genta away from the icons everyone already knows. It captures the designer not simply drawing the exterior of a watch, but treating the entire object, case, dial, movement, and even crown, as a single piece of design. For collectors looking beyond the Royal Oak and Nautilus chapters of the Genta story, pieces like this are where things get particularly interesting.

Gerald Genta is the designer who quietly shaped modern watch culture more than any CEO ever could.

Born in Geneva in 1931 and trained as a jeweler, Genta approached watches like sculpture—built on proportion, silhouette, and pure visual confidence. His career began at Universal Genève with the SAS Polerouter, then expanded into a run of era-defining icons: the Omega Constellation refresh, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, and beyond. If the 1970s invented the luxury sports watch, Genta drew the blueprint.

But his genius wasn’t limited to steel and seriousness. He moved effortlessly between high jewelry houses and mass-market brands, and even licensed Disney in the 1980s, proving that playful design could still be unmistakably sophisticated.

Genta passed away in 2011, leaving behind an almost unbelievable output—over 100,000 watch designs—and a legacy that still defines the industry. His greatest trick was simple: he made watches feel less like products, and more like art you could wear every day.

Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
