Why We Love it
–Few watches make the argument for restraint quite as convincingly as a Breguet.
Breguet dress watches from the 1990s occupy a particularly interesting period in the manufacture’s modern history, combining a design vocabulary rooted in the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet with increasingly sophisticated contemporary watchmaking. The Classique Reference 3325 captures that balance beautifully: compact, elegant, and immediately recognizable without making much noise about it.
Measuring just 33mm, the case has the beautifully restrained proportions of a traditional dress watch. Its slender bezel leaves plenty of room for the real attraction here: a brilliant white enamel dial. Black Breguet numerals are joined by a finely rendered minute track and the manufacture’s signature, creating a display that feels almost typographic in its precision. A pair of thermally blued, open-tipped Breguet hands provides the only real color, shifting from nearly black to vivid blue depending on the light.
It is a deceptively simple dial. There is nowhere for imperfect proportions or finishing to hide, and that purity is precisely what gives the watch its presence. Inside is an automatic mechanical movement, adding an element of everyday practicality to what is otherwise an unapologetically traditional dress watch. The modest dimensions and slim profile make it exceptionally comfortable on the wrist, while the restrained design has aged remarkably well more than three decades later.
This example has been fitted with a new tan alligator leather strap while retaining its original signed Breguet buckle, a particularly welcome detail on a vintage piece such as this. The Reference 3325 succeeds because nothing competes for attention. The enamel, the typography, those unmistakable blue hands, and the compact case all work together. It is Breguet reduced to the essentials, which is exactly where Breguet tends to look its best.

+However, these numerals and hands are but a single innovation in a long list of horological firsts devised by master watchmaker and inventor Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823), a Neuchâtel-born savant whose Parisian career saw the advent of myriad watchmaking creations that we take for granted today. Indeed, it was Breguet who devised the first self-winding watches, as well as the first gongs for repeating watches and the tourbillon. Not many inventors can claim the king and queen of France as patrons, but indeed King Louis XVI and his bride Marie Antoinette were amongst his admirers.
20th-century Breguet is no less storied: The company’s Type 20 pilot’s chronograph issued to the French Aéronautique Militaire in the 1950s provided a benchmark for military watch design. Its stark black dial and utilitarian look belied the sophisticated retour en vol (“flyback”) mechanism within the movement, which allowed a pilot to stop, reset and start the chronograph by depressing the bottom pusher just once.
More recently, under the current management of Mark A. Hayek, modern Breguet has continued to register new patents and amass a dedicated following. The brand’s “Classique” dress watches from the 1990s and 2000s, for example, feature some of the most striking dials in modern watchmaking, making use of guilloché patterns, blue steel hands and Roman numerals. While the company’s contemporary offerings continue to increase in sophistication and the number of complications available, it’s surely these simple, gorgeous time-only models that best encapsulate the elegant timepieces of A.L. Breguet himself.
