Why We Love it

At first glance, this 1960s Wittnauer appears to be a classic mid-century dress watch: a clean steel case measuring 33mm, slender applied baton markers, elegant hands, and a crosshair small-seconds register at 6 o'clock. But then the dial catches the light.

What appears from a distance to be a simple silver dial reveals itself as a miniature work of art. Covered in an intricate organic texture, its surface evokes everything from bamboo leaves and windswept grasses to frost patterns on a winter window. The effect is almost naturalistic, as though the dial were shaped by nature rather than a machine. Every shift of the wrist uncovers a new landscape of lines and shadows.

The watch itself dates from a period when Wittnauer was producing some of its most compelling designs. Founded by Albert Wittnauer after immigrating to New York as a teenager in the late 19th century, the company built its reputation by offering Swiss quality at accessible prices. Through its close relationship with Longines, Wittnauer became known for precision instruments, aviation watches, and elegant everyday timepieces that punched well above their weight.

This example perfectly captures that philosophy. The steel case remains understated and versatile, allowing the remarkable dial to take center stage. The small-seconds display adds a touch of old-world charm, while the overall proportions make it exceptionally wearable by modern standards.

Fitted to a warm brown leather strap, this Wittnauer feels less like a simple dress watch and more like a reminder of an era when even an everyday timepiece could contain an unexpected flourish of artistry.

Brand Story

+
From its inception in the 1880s, Wittnauer gained a reputation for its excellent complicated watches. Aviators like Amelia Earhart piloted their planes with instruments made by Wittnauer. Daredevil aviator Jimmy Mattern wore a Wittnauer AllProof in his attempted flight around the world in 1933. During the Second World War, the firm produced compasses for the U.S. military. And for decades, Wittnauer was inextricably tied with Longines — indeed, many of both brands’ wares from the mid-20th century are signed “Longines-Wittnauer Watch Co.”

In the 1950s and ‘60s, the brand produced exceptional chronographs at a more competitive price point than its Swiss contemporaries. Products such as the reference 3256, which used the affordable Venus caliber 188, are today relatively plentiful, and handsome to boot. Slightly more high-end pieces, such as the reference 7004A, featured unique elements like thick sword hands, a lollipop seconds hand, and a red count-up bezel. And the 242T Professional is well known to fans of the Space Race — supposedly submitted for trials in the 1960s against the likes of the Rolex Daytona and others, it may have very nearly beaten out the Speedmaster to the Moon.

But, like so many watch brands, Wittnauer folded in the face of budgetary crises in the mid-1980s, prompting Longines to dissolve its relationship with the company. Despite this, vintage Wittnauer watches remain a testament to the company’s ingenuity and elegance, while some of their more unique pieces — like the Wittnauer 2000 mechanical calendar watch and their Super Compressor dive watch — can be had at relatively affordable prices.
